Howe Island Community Fund Established

Frontenac Islands News: Howe Island Ward: Former Howe Island resident Glynnis Elliot, through a generous donation, has created a Howe Island Community Fund under the auspices of the Community Foundation of Kingston & Area. Some years after retirement Elliot was forced to leave Howe Island for health reasons. "But she has never forgotten the wonderful times and the wonderful people on Howe Island and wanted to give something back in return," according to Vikram Varma, the Executive Director of the Community Foundation.

The aims of the fund envisioned by Glynnis include such things developing public access to the waterfront, recreational facilities and children's activities, island beautification and community projects related to arts culture, and health as well as to Howe Island heritage and history projects.

Grants from the fund will be given to charitable groups in Frontenac Island's Howe Island ward to fund community projects. Residents are eligible to apply, while (non resident)individuals with projects planned to enhance Howe island life are encouraged to approach a registered charity or Frontenac Islands Council to act as an intermediary for their application. Glennis has a further hope that when her fund reaches a level of $50,000 that a sub-fund could be created to fund scholarship applications for post secondary education for children of full time HoweIsland residents.

Anyone who supports the aims of the fund is encouraged to donate or leave a bequest to increase the Howe Island Community Fund. To make a donation or bequestcall the CFKA office at 613-546-9696.

"It will truly be a gift that keeps on giving."
