Marysville Makeover Garden Competition

1st Annual “Marysville Makeover’”

Garden Competition

In response to recommendations resulting from the First Impressions visit that the Island participated in last summer, Wolfe Island Business & Tourism Association is this year organizing the 1st Annual ‘Marysville Makeover”.

As we are focusing primarily on the village this year, the project will be limited to residences and businesses within the geographic area as outlined below in the “Rules”

First of all there will be a competition for gardens. Gardens can be traditional ‘in ground’ gardens or, for those with small lots and lack of space for ‘in ground’ gardens, we are encouraging creation of ‘container’ gardens. You can use hanging baskets, containers, window boxes - let your imagination run wild.

Gardens will be judged on creativity, originality, colour, variety and balance. They should be clean and free of debris. Accessories such as bird baths, flowerpots, arbours etc. will add to the garden’s appeal. Gardens will be judged on the use of available space; inspiration and creativity; and the garden’s contribution to the surrounding community.

As a second part of the “Makeover”, WIBTA will be purchasing large containers and installing them in public places throughout the village. Possible locations may be at the Post Office, Town Hall, high traffic corners etc. Community groups, or residents will be encouraged to ‘sponsor’ a container – to plant it and care for it though out the growing season. You need not live within the prescribed area to sponsor a container this will allow residents living outside the village to participate and help us demonstrate our “Island Pride”. Each container will be identified with the name of the family or group caring for it.

Prizes
First prizes of $500 each will be awarded to the best residential and best business garden. There will be one second prize of $250. There will also be a people’s choice prize of $100 for the Sponsored Containers.

Rules:
1. Businesses, and Individuals are eligible to enter.
2. Only gardens visible from the curbside will be eligible.
3. Competing gardens must be within the eligible area which includes all of the village of Marysville; Road 96 between 5th Line & 8th Line; Road 95 between Road 96 & Baseline; and 7th Line between Road 96 & Baseline
4. You must indicate your intention to enter your garden or sponsor a container by June 1st. Entry is free PLUS each gardener will receive a small gift to help them get underway. Entry forms available at the Tourist Information Centre and at village businesses.
5. Judging will be the week of July 20th with winners announced on Saturday 25 July.
6. All competition entrants must agree to allow publication of garden photographs, names and addresses for promotional and awards purposes.
7. Judges decisions are final.
Judges Committee: Judges’ committee will be made of up ‘off Islanders’ and/or summer residents residing outside the contest area.
