Big Sandy Bay Update

ENJOY THE SAND, SURF AND SHOREBIRDS
AT BIG SANDY BAY, WOLFE ISLAND

Now that more seasonal summer weather has returned, there has never been a better time in 2009 for southeastern Ontario residents and tourists to make a day trip to the scenic and ecologically significant Big Sandy Bay (BSB) area on Wolfe Island, Ontario.
“We invite visitors to swim, hike, picnic, birdwatch, and enjoy the natural beauty of the BSB area,” said Rick Lindgren, a member of the publicly appointed Stewardship Committee that oversees BSB management.

The BSB area is approximately 404 hectares (1,000 acres) consisting of sand dunes, wetlands and woodlands. An important (and popular) feature of BSB is the several kilometers of natural sand beach and warm shallow waters.

The BSB area is now open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. until early September. A small admission fee is payable at the entrance gatehouse, and free parking is available for vehicles and bicycles.

To enhance the public accessibility and enjoyment of the BSB area, there have been some recent changes and upgrades, including:
- installation of benches along the hiking trail and beach;
- construction of a dune-top viewing platform offering panoramic views of Lake Ontario and the Black Lake wetlands; and
- availability of a special all-terrain wheelchair that may be borrowed by BSB visitors, and trail improvements to accommodate wheelchair access to the shoreline.

BSB visitors can get to Wolfe Island via the public ferry from Kingston, Ontario (free of charge), or the private ferry from Cape Vincent, New York. Once on Wolfe Island, visitors should travel Highway 95, turn west on Reed’s Bay Road, and follow the signs to the BSB area.

For more information, please contact Rick Lindgren (613-385-1686), or go to: www.bigsandybay.ca.
