Wolfe Islander III Anniversary
Sunday, the 15th of August is the
35th anniversary of the Wolfe Islander III’s christening
in Port Arthur shipyard, just before she was sideways launched!
Mrs. Molly Apps, the wife of MLA Syl Apps for Kingston & the Islands did the honours!!!
Captain Brian Johnson will decorate the ferry with an extra flag, possibly green and white balloons.
AND,,,,,,
the Wolfe Islander will be flying the ORIGINAL FLAGS she flew that day!!
For your information:
The ferry left Port Arthur on Tuesday, December 9, 1975 @ 3:20 pm, under the careful eye of Senior Captain RF Fawcett,
assisted by Captains Lewis Kiell and Harold Hogan.
In her engine room were Chief Engineer Winfield Woodman,
assisted by Engineers Jim Berry and Eldon McCready.
Several crew members of the Wolfe Island ferry Service made the trip,
testing out their new ship, sailing out onto wild, Lake Superior, four weeks after the tragic and mysterious disappearance of the American ore carrier SS Edmund Fitzgerald.
Six days after her departure, the new ferry landed at her new berth at Barrack street in Kingston on Tuesday, December 16 @ 11:15 am.
The new ferry would carry more cars in one trip than the older ‘Wolfe Islander’ and ‘Upper Canada’ combined and She would undergo several ‘ice tests’ over the coming winter before being inaugurated into service on Feb. 5, 1976.
WITH THANKS TO MRS. ELAINE BERRY FOR THE DATES AND TIMES!!!

Simcoe Island Lighthouse Meeting #2
Lighthouse Meeting #2
Saturday, August 21, 3:30 - 5 PM
1263 Main Street (Hwy 96), Marysville, Wolfe Island
(Claire and Bernard Muller’s place w the red barn, just east of Mosier’s Garage)
Agenda
1. Volunteer to keep minutes of this meeting
2. Membership list - update
3. Review of “Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act” - for newcomers
4. Business arising from the last meeting
- follow-up on emails circulated re concerns about excess traffic/lack of parking/police protection/maintenance costs etc.
Maintenance estimates - Keith Millar - painted attached building 3 years ago - labour $1500, paint $800. His “ball park” estimate for painting lighthouse (including the attached bldg) approx $8000 every 3-5 years - about $1600 - $2700/year.
5. Affiliation with the Wolfe Island Historical Society (WIHS) - options? Vote?
A) Independent group - would involve a complete executive/registration as a separate charitable organization. Communication with WIHS optional.
B) Separate but affiliated - separate executive, registration as a separate charitable organization, representation on/regular communication w WIHS
C) Working Committee of WIHS - No executive required, just various sub-committees (fund-raising, maintenance, education-history, etc.). All committee members would be members of the WIHS
Given the mission statement of the WIHS, to protect, preserve and promote the culture and heritage of Wolfe (including Simcoe, Horseshoe and Mud) Island , and the political expedience of affiliation with an established group that already receives funding from the township and govt grants, there is a certain logic to hitching our wagon to the WIHS in order to take advantage of their expertise in fund-raising, grant-writing, etc. as opposed to being an entirely separate entity.
6. Election of Executive - If we opt for (A) or (B) we will need an executive. If so, nominations for President/VP/Secretary/Treasurer/Fund Raising Chair/Maintenance Committee Chair/History-Education Director/Political Liaison will be invited and voted on at the next meeting.
7. Name of the group? vote
Keepers of the Light
Keepers of the Nine Mile Point Lighthouse
Keepers of the Simcoe Island Lighthouse
Other?
8 Heritage Petition -status/submission
9. Notice of WIHS - AGM - Aug 25th, 7:30 PM, United Church Hall
Bring a folding chair if you have one. See you Saturday
