The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed the
presence of the emerald ash borer (EAB) in the County of Frontenac. The discovery was made at a private campground near the town of Mountain Grove in Central Frontenac Township.
The EAB is a highly destructive invasive beetle. It was confirmed as present in Canada in the summer of 2002. The beetle is metallic green in colour and approximately 0.5 inch long.
Movement restrictions, which prohibit the movement of all ash materials and all species of firewood from the affected site, have been put in place by the CFIA.
The CFIA will survey the area during the coming weeks and properties where EAB is deemed to be present will be regulated to prevent ash materials from being moved. Further regulatorymeasures will be considered once all survey work has been completed for the year.
EAB is established in several areas of Canada and can spread rapidly if it is moved by people.
For more information visit the Frontenac County website.
